Bunnies, Baskets and Beyond: Easter Traditions around the World

Since its beginnings, Easter has always been a time of celebration and feasting. Like many Christian holidays, the festivities have grown beyond the church pews to include everything from elaborate hunts and egg dying to the traditional ham dinner and even marshmallow Peeps. In addition to the bonnets and baskets, there are many customs around the world that reveal how both the faithful and the non-believers chose to celebrate this springtime holiday.

Throughout Western and Eastern Europe there are many common traditions associated with Easter but you’ll also discover some highly unusual ways of marking the occasion. For example, in the Czech Republic there is a tradition of “spanking” young women with a hand-made whip known as a “pomlazka.” While the tradition seems a bit barbaric, it is actually more of a harmless flirtation. In fact, unvisited women can feel as slighted as the girl who didn’t receive a Valentine. The women reciprocate the gentlemen’s taunts by giving out colored eggs and exacting their revenge the following day by pouring cold buckets of water on them. Continue reading

Travel as a Single: Explore New Places, Make New Friends!

If you’re traveling on trips for singles, either with friends or in a group, traveling alone is becoming increasingly popular. More and more women, in particular, are deciding to travel single. Why is this becoming such an appealing alternative to group travel?

Do you like meeting new people? If you travel by rail on Amtrak, dinner seating is assigned on a random basis as openings arise, so if you travel single you never know who you’ll be sitting with. It leads to some amazing conversations, such as this one on a West Coast train headed through Northern California: “Where are you from?” “I live in Houston.” “Really? I lived there for twenty years.” “What part of town?” “I was just west of Rice University.” “You wouldn’t believe how that area has changed.” The conversation just flowed freely from there! On a long rail trip when you are traveling single, you run into these new friends in the observation car, or at the lounge car. You even have the option of joining forces for other meals. YMT Vacations offers an Alaska Cruise and West Coast Train Tour which allows you to enjoy a group travel package and experience both the thrill of rail travel and a cruise when you travel as a single! Upon this Rock

Exploring Plymouth and Other Treasures of New England

In Plymouth, Massachusetts there is a rock with the date 1620 engraved upon it. As the story is told, when the first Pilgrims landed on America’s shores they stepped on this very stone and from then on it became known as Plymouth Rock.

The colony of Plymouth was founded by religious separatists from Holland and England who were believed to be headed for the Hudson Bay but settled where they landed in what would later become Massachusetts. Today, visitors to the area can see the Mayflower II, a replica of the infamous ship that ferried the 102 Pilgrims across the Atlantic to their new home. There’s also Plimoth Plantation. This 17th-Century English Village is a re-creation of the small farming and maritime community established by the Pilgrims along the shore of Plymouth Harbor. What’s really interesting is that the entire experience is set in an actual place and time in history — 1627 to be exact. Continue reading

Picture This: Tips for Taking “Grand” Pictures of the Canyon

This year for Christmas the kids decided to upgrade our old Polaroid camera to something a bit flashier. It seems that all those years of awards ceremonies, birthday parties and piano recitals had finally done the old model in. I plan to break in my new digital camera on our vacation this summer to the national parks. With the excitement of this new gift, there also comes the job of actually learning how to turn it on and use the “dad gum” thing. Where the Polaroid was simply a matter of pointing and shooting, there are more bells and whistles on today’s cameras than the space shuttle. Continue reading

See what it’s like to have enough money to build a “summer cottage” that others call a palatial mansion! On Newport tours, experience the “Gilded Age” – the rise of the modern industrial economy – where the opulence of the Newport Mansions reflect the time. These were the summer homes of the nineteenth century American industrialists, who built empires from railroads, steamships, and coal. On a Northeast tour, a visit to these fabulous mansions is time well spent.

The Breakers. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt established a family fortune in the late 1800s through steamships and railroads. The Commodore’s grandson Cornelius II purchased a wooden house called The Breakers. After the house was destroyed by fire, a 70 room Italian Renaissance villa was commissioned. This is a must see stop on a New England tour! The architect Richard Morris Hunt directed an international team of 2,500 craftsmen and artisans to design a palazzo inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin, an unusual sight while on vacation in New England!
