Fatima, Portugal
Those who are making a European pilgrimage on an escorted vacation should make sure that Fatima, Portugal, is included in their itinerary. The city is known for its deeply religious roots and the infamous visions that occurred in 1917.

Three young children from Fatima - Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto - once claimed they saw apparitions of the Virgin of the Rosary, also known as Our Lady of Fatima. Thus, to honor this monumental moment in Portugal's religious history, one of today's most popular attractions was erected - the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Apariciones Chapel of Fatima stands in the Cova da Iria pasture where the children claimed to have had their visions.

A similar site is the Basilica of Fatima, which is where the relics of the three children are said to lie. On the other side of this facility is one of the biggest churches on earth, Igreja da Santissima Trinidade. It is a remarkable structure that was built within the last decade.

Other intriguing sites tourists must check out on an escorted tour include the Batalha Monastery and the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitoria.
