Learn the history of Germany while in Hamburg

January 6, 2011 - 2:29am
Germany is a beautiful country, offering both urban cityscapes and naturally scenic rural areas for travelers to visit. In the city of Hamburg, which is one of the more affluent Hanseatic cities, visitors will find out much of its background through several attractions.

The history of Hamburg stretches centuries back in time, as it was previously a member of the Hanseatic League of Independent Ports in the northern region of Europe, and also built its first stock exchange in 1558.

Travelers should make sure to visit the St. Michaelis Church, which is a prominent structure in the German city and can be seen in its skyline. It towers more than 130 meters above the earth and features baroque spire covered with copper.

At the Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg, visitors will find a collection of more than 40,000 model ships, crew uniforms, construction plans and more, among 1 million photos of the city's naval history.

For a look into how Germans traveled many years ago, Miniatur Wunderland is the largest model railway attraction in the world, showing a condensed version of old-time transportation methods.
