Day 4

Caen via Giverny

Travel to the home of Claude Monet in lovely Giverny, where the master of Impressionism’s house is a piece of art in itself. It features striking colors throughout its light-filled rooms, but the highlight of this unforgettable property is its grounds—particularly the rich gardens, whose peaceful elegance inspired so many of Monet’s pieces. After free time and lunch on your own in Giverny, see the Bayeux Tapestry. Day 6

The Mont Saint-Michel Abbey is a one-of-a-kind island monastery and commune set in the bay between Brittany and Normandy. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is on an island about a half mile off the coast is only accessible during low tide, via a path that Celtic, Roman, and Christian worshipers have dutifully taken since at least the 6th century A.D. Admission to the Abbey is included. When you cross the bay to tour the site, which consists of a Gothic Benedictine abbey and tiny village built between the 11th and 16th centuries, don’t forget to look up. There is a golden statue of the Archangel Michael, who is said to have convinced a local bishop in the 8th century to build a holy site in his honor in this exact spot. This evening, guests are invited to enjoy an included 3-course meal together back at the hotel. (B, D)

Your first stop is a leading Loire Valley winery, where you will sample their most popular varietals, then take a guided tour followed by free time for lunch on your own. Next, explore the delightful city of Tours. Your two-hour panoramic and walking tour will include the mayor's office, Châteaux Royal, Saint-Gatien Cathedral, Wilson Bridge, Old Town, the Saint-Pierre-Le-Puellier garden and stairs, Place Plumereau, and Carlemagne Tower. Spend more time making your way through Old Town, or take a shuttle back to the hotel. (B)

Day 8

Today, we explore the finest châteaux in all of the Loire Valley! Your first stop is Chateau Chenonceau, a dazzling estate built in the 16th century that spans across the River Cher. It’s one of the most famous châteaux in the country thanks to its striking design and iconic white façade made with locally quarried stones. Take a self-guided tour of the château and the lush gardens before transferring to Amboise for free time and lunch on your own. Next, take an included video-guided tour of the breathtaking royal Château of Amboise that was built in ancient Roman times as a mighty fortress, and was transformed into a royal residence for Renaissance kings and their illustrious guests. In fact, when King Francis I lived at the château, he invited Leonardo da Vinci himself for an extended stay. Tour the castle and grounds on your own. (B)

Day 9

Paris via Orléans

Your final day in France promises to be full of experiences you’ll cherish forever. First, take a guided tour of Chambord Castle. Château de Chambord is the quintessential French castle— its French Renaissance architecture, imposing towers, and moat make it look like it was ripped right out of a book of fairytales. After lunch on your own in Orleans—which was liberated from the English by legendary teen Joan of Arc in 1429—take an audio-guided tour of Chartres Cathedral. The stained-glass windows, moving use of light, potent symbolism, and classically Gothic architectural elements such as flying buttresses and soaring ceilings make it France’s ultimate high church. Continue to Paris for a delicious farewell feast at the hotel. (B, D)
