Visit the Sistine Chapel to view floor-to-ceiling biblical frescoes painted by Michelangelo around 1512, St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square. In the afternoon, our tour continues with a drive to Naples, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, and home to the largest historic city center in Europe, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s unsurprising that Naples has always been such a desirable location, given its situation 400 feet above the Mediterranean—it boasts a fantastic view and wonderful food. During your time here, perhaps join our optional pizza-making demonstration and dinner! (B) Note: Touring the Vatican Museums requires walking up several staircases and 2-3 hours of walking.

Day 5

Pompeii and Sorrento

This morning we'll travel to neighboring Pompeii for a guided tour. Arguably the world’s most moving ruins, Pompeii is an ancient Roman city frozen in time by the cataclysmic volcanic eruption of nearby Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE. A rush of superheated volcanic ash and pumice covered the city, instantaneously killing residents while preserving their bodies, buildings, and belongings at the precise moment of their burial. Tour the resting place of embracing lovers, grand and modest family homes, contemporary art, and countless remnants of the daily lives of the thousands of people caught entirely by surprise by Vesuvius’ violent eruption. Pompeii gives visitors a new perspective, and touching insight into what life was like for these doomed Romans so many centuries ago. Continue to Sorrento for an afternoon at your leisure. Enjoy the historic town and its incredible views and stunning cathedral before returning to Naples this evening. (B)

Santorini, Greece (8:00 AM – 8:00 PM)

Today is yours to explore this unique island paradise at your own pace. Enjoy the day and take in the majesty of the island’s spectacular 1,000-foot-high volcanic cliffs! Also famous for the vista of its stacked whitewashed houses of Fira (the main town) perched on the side of the caldera, Santorini is one of the most photographed Greek Islands. On the southern side of the island, the resorts of Kamari and Perissa are well-known for their black volcanic sand, and Santorini is also renowned for producing some of the best wine in Greece.

Days 9 & 10

Mykonos, Greece (7:00 AM – 10:00 PM next day)

You have two full days to explore this magical island and relax on one of the many sandy beaches. Wandering the island on foot is easy — the central part of Mykonos Town is closed to traffic during most of the day, and will delight you with its whitewashed cubic houses, labyrinth of narrow streets, beautiful churches, lovely chapels, and many purple bougainvillea!

Day 11

Athens, Greece (7:00 AM – 2:00 PM)

The cradle of civilization and the oldest city in Europe, Athens is home to the Acropolis and some of the most important architectural structures and archaeological finds in the Western world. This magnificent city is also distinctly modern and full of extraordinary art, culture, cuisine and shopping.

Day 12

Argostoli, Kefalonia, Greece (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

The island of Kelafonia is full of incredible sights that visitors from around the world fall in love with—chief among them the views of the mesmerizingly blue Ionian Sea you can enjoy from nearly everywhere in Argostoli.
