Day 2

San José to Arenal Volcano Region

Take a scenic drive through the country to La Fortuna in the Arenal region, famous for the lush Arenal Volcano that towers majestically 5,385 feet above the surrounding highlands. En route, you will have the chance to see and enjoy uniquely Costa Rican experiences. Take an offbeat stroll underneath leafy arches, past sculpted faces, and next to friendly dinosaurs in Zarcero’s topiary park. Next, see how oxcarts are produced and decorated in Sarchí. Brightly painted oxcarts have become a beloved symbol of Costa Rica, and the tradition continues at the historic Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory. Watch master craftspeople continue the 120-yearlong tradition of building sturdy, sensible, hardworking carts to carry coffee beans, and then painting the humble wagons in bright colors and elaborate geometric patterns. Spend the rest of your day at leisure in La Fortuna, where you can relax in the shadow of one of the world’s most stunning volcanos. (B)

Day 3

Arenal Volcano Region

Take a morning tour of Arenal 1968 Park, a lovely private reserve with breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano. The park is named after the year of Arenal Volcano’s most dramatic eruption, when three surrounding towns were destroyed and much of the park itself was covered in lava—creating the very hills and trails that visitors now use as vantage points and hiking paths. The afternoon and evening activities harness the earth’s power for your enjoyment in a totally different way—relax in the naturally restorative waters of Tabacón Hot Springs. Deep in the rainforest, Tabacón Hot Springs Resort and Spa offers stunningly clear thermal pools famous for their healing properties. Let your worries float away to the sound of chattering birds and running water. At the end of the day, you are invited to sit down for an included dinner at the resort’s highly-rated restaurant. Day 4

Travel from the base of a volcano to the top of the Tilarán Mountains in the charming community of Monteverde. After the scenic ride through Costa Rica’s stunning interior, tour an authentic coffee plantation. Costa Rican coffee is famous for its quality—100% Arabica beans are the best in the world, and it’s been illegal to grow anything else in Costa Rica since 1989. Learn about the history of the industry, techniques for growing the best beans, and exactly how to brew the perfect cup. You’re free to relax on your own this afternoon and evening. (B)

Day 5

Monteverde to Punta Leona

Journey through the mist of Monteverde’s legendary cloud forest, one of Costa Rica’s most important ecotourism destinations. Cloud forests are high altitude rainforests perpetually shrouded by water vapor. This near-constant fog, coupled with mild temperatures that slow the evaporation process, make cloud forests into natural greenhouses where vibrant trees and magnificent flowers thrive. Walk across a hanging bridge and be surrounded on all sides by the thick, warm fog—you will feel like you are literally inside of a cloud. Punta Leona is your next destination. En route, enjoy a stop at the Tárcoles River Bridge. Look down at the muddy river island directly beneath the bridge—this humble spot is Costa Rica’s best place to see crowds of crocodiles, who calmly congregate below. (B)

Day 6

Punta Leona

Spend the day relaxing in the paradise of Punta Leona. Your resort has numerous free amenities and activities that you may choose to take advantage of, including access to its extraordinary beach, excellent walking trails, and a colorful butterfly garden. The blue morpho butterfly is Costa Rica’s most famous, and you won’t soon forget seeing the 8-inch long behemoth catch the sunlight, flashing iridescent sapphire wings as it flutters silently by. Day 7

Punta Leona to San José

Guests may begin the morning with free time at the resort, or with an optional tour of Manuel Antonio National Park. Manuel Antonio truly has something for everyone. It is home to both an expansive white sand beach, and hundreds of acres of pristine rainforest full of colorful flowers, tropical birds, and mischievous monkeys. If you look up and see a barely moving patch of green blink at you, count yourself lucky—sloths, perhaps the most popular native of the park, move so slowly that they often grow a layer of algae that can give their brown fur a cheerful green tint. Guests return to San José this afternoon. (B)
