Day 5

Santa Barbara, Solvang, and San Luis Obispo Area

Visit Santa Barbara—the American Riviera—and enjoy its Spanish mission style architecture, mild Mediterranean climate, and stunning ocean views. Situated on El Camino Real, the historic route connecting California’s chain of 21 missions, this once humble Catholic outpost has transformed into an upscale seaside resort that remains a popular escape for wealthy Angelenos. We'll have a brief stop at the lovely Santa Barbara Mission, where you can enjoy an included self-guided tour. Continue your tour up the scenic road to Solvang, a charming Danish replica village situated in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley. Be sure to taste the exquisite baked goods prepared by Solvang’s renowned bakeries before traveling north to end the day in the San Luis Obispo area.

Day 6

Pismo Beach, Hearst Castle, and Monterey

In the morning, tour famous Hearst Castle. The sprawling, beautiful former estate of media mogul William Randolph Hearst offers splendid views of the coast. Enjoy a 45-minute guided tour of the grand rooms inside the famous castle, with time to stroll the garden and pool areas while enjoying panoramic views, before heading to Elephant Seal beach and Ragged Point. Keep your eyes out for California Gray Whales migrating south along the coastline— catching a spouting whale in the distance is an experience you’ll never forget! Overnight in Monterey, home to the waterfront street immortalized by John Steinbeck’s classic novel, Cannery Row. Enjoy the evening at leisure in this former fisherman’s community.

Day 7

Monterey Leisure Day

Enjoy a leisurely day in this charming seaside town. Monterey is known throughout California for its excellent clam chowder (best in a bread bowl—and do ask for extra oyster crackers) and bustling Old Town Historic District. Monterey’s beaches are perfect for strolling, especially for guests hoping to run into a colony of chatty seals or sea lions. Join an optional tour to participate in a unique local activity, or simply explore Monterey at your own pace.

Day 8

Monterey to San Francisco

This morning, head down the breathtaking 17-Mile Drive. Enjoy views of Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove, taking the opportunity to snap a picture of the famed Lone Cypress on a quick stop before arriving in San Francisco. Day 9

San Francisco - Alcatraz Visit

This morning, take the ferry to the notorious prison island of Alcatraz for an included visit. Situated on a small island just off the coast, the federal penitentiary that operated from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to “the rock.” The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is known as one of the world's toughest prisons. Then, we discover the bustling “City by the Bay” during a comprehensive city tour of San Francisco. Cross the Golden Gate Bridge, see Nob Hill, catch a glimpse of famed Lombard Street, and see many more exciting sights!

Tour Rating:

We have been on a lot of trips ( traveling by ourselves) and on several other group tours. Although this was a larger group tour than we usually take, we were very pleased with the trip. We would rate it as one of our best vacations! We felt the price we paid was a great value for all that we were able to see and do during the ten day tour. We were very happy with everything on the trip. The YMT staff was great and the accommodations were very nice. Plus, we saw a lot more than if we had traveled by ourselves, because we have been to California four other times on road trips and saw more this trip than ever before.

Tour Rating:

One of best trips we've had. Hotels, California coast, side trips to local spots, and extra trips were great. Appreciated the knowledgeable tour guide, and the high presence of many of the company office people. Know who I am talking with on the phone when next calling. Would have liked more time in Solvang as it was somewhat crowded but a place with so much to see. Looking forward to our Fall trip this year.

This was our second tour with YMT Vacations. Both experiences were very pleasurable. A great vacation at a reasonable price. We celebrated our 50th anniversary in Feb. 2015 on YMT's 4 Island Hawaiian Tour. The Rose Parade had been on our bucket list for a number of years. YMT's prices allowed us to take both of these trips. We have been very satisfied with our experiences traveling with YMT Vacations.

Barb was the most excellent tour guide ever experienced. Gracious, knowledgeable, sense of humor, smart and willing to go out of her way to help everybody and answer all questions. She is a gem. Smooth problem free vacation. All expectations were met.

The optional tours were really nice and very well organized. We felt that we were able to see more than if we were trying to find it ourselves Thank you for some great choices on our tour. We have really enjoyed both YMT vacations and have told a lot of friends and family so I hope some of them contact you. Thank you for our personal evening before the parade. The meal was great and so was the information on the parade. We were impressed you helped at the parking lot and that we got to meet you!
