Los Angeles to Bakersfield

Start the day at the Getty Villa for a guided tour of the museum, where you will enjoy an included lunch. Next, is a guided tour of Los Angeles and Hollywood, seeing many of the can’t-miss highlights. View Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the ornate TCL Chinese Theatre, and the Dolby Theatre where every year the world’s biggest movie stars don their finest and shine bright at the Academy Awards. Leave the big city behind for Bakersfield. (B, L)

Sequoia National Park to Visalia

Take a pleasant drive to the thick forests of Sequoia National Park. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and administered by the National Park Service with Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia is home to the largest living single-stem tree in the world, General Sherman. Standing 275 feet tall with a diameter of 25 feet, the towering tree is marvelous! The Giant Forest, where you’ll find General Sherman, also contains an impressive five of the ten largest trees on Earth. (B)

Kings Canyon National Park to Oakhurst

Enjoy panoramic vistas as you explore Kings Canyon National Park, which is adjacent to Sequoia National Park and just as magnificent. See the ancient giant sequoias and redwoods in Grant Grove. At the center of Grant Grove is the General Giant Tree, the second largest tree in the world. This 3,000-year-old wonder stands almost 270 feet tall and has a base circumference of 107 feet! With terrain ranging from sun-soaked foothills to alpine forests, a huge variety of wildlife call these two national parks home. Look out for animals including gray foxes, bobcats, marmots, pikas, eagles, and bears. Spend the evening in Oakhurst. (B)

Yosemite National Park

Spend most of the day visiting one of the crown jewels of the National Park System: Yosemite! This magnificent and diverse land, with elevations ranging from 2,000 to over 13,000 feet, abounds with spectacular granite cliffs, giant waterfalls, grand meadows, and towering trees. Central to the National Park idea, Yosemite was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Discover Yosemite Valley, which lies among the impressive Half Dome and El Capitan summits. Rising more than 4,700 feet above the valley floor, Half Dome is appropriately named for its one sheer face and three smooth and round faces, which make it appear like a dome that has been cut in half. The 3,000-foot-tall El Capitan is an impressive vertical rock formation that is a sight to behold, and attracts many serious climbers from around the world. It is the subject of the 2018 documentary Free Solo, which follows Alex Honnold’s incredible free solo ascent, a magnificent feat that he is the only person to have ever achieved. (B)

Mammoth Mountain

Take the scenic Tioga Pass to Mammoth Mountain. Your next stop will be the otherworldly Mono Lake. Look out for birds—between 1-2 million migrate through each year—and for the bizarre tufa towers. Mono Lake is famous for these ghostly limestone growths jutting up like long dead trees on the shoreline. Spend the afternoon relaxing in Mammoth!

Mammoth Mountain

Take a morning sightseeing tour of Mammoth Lakes, where you will see the gorgeous Mammoth Lakes Basin and the sharp mountain peaks of Minaret Vista. During your leisure afternoon in Mammoth, you can opt to take a shuttle to the dramatic Devils Postpile National Monument, an unusual rock formation of columnar basalt. You may also join us for an optional gondola ride to the top of Mammoth Mountain at an elevation of 11,053 feet. (B)

Death Valley to Las Vegas

Drive through the dramatic landscape of the Mojave Desert to the ultimate desert hotspot— the famous City of Sin. En route, stop in Death Valley, one of the hottest, driest, and lowest spots in the world. Lunch is on your own at The Oasis at Death Valley, a quirky-cool hotel inside Death Valley National Park where the Old West meets Old Hollywood. Stop at the blindingly white, astonishingly vast Badwater Basin. This saltwater flat lies 282 feet below sea level, making it the lowest point in North America. The evening in Las Vegas is yours to enjoy. (B)

Las Vegas

This morning enjoy a photo op at the Las Vegas sign followed by a tour of the Las Vegas Strip. Then, enjoy an optional tour or spend the day at your leisure. It is constantly abuzz, and its reputation as a place where anything is possible is well earned. The Grand Canyon

Today we visit the grandest of all parks in the West—the Grand Canyon! Travel via I-40, crossing historic Route 66 before you enter the spectacular Grand Canyon, and end your day by the South Rim. The park shuttle system makes it easy to take it all in at your own pace. The evening and the sunset, which lights the canyon in many hues of red and purple, is yours to enjoy!

Page/Lake Powell via Horseshoe Bend

Wake up to a spectacular sunrise over the canyon this morning! For an unforgettable experience, join us for an optional helicopter tour over the canyon (additional cost). Today we see Horseshoe Bend, a u-shaped area of the Grand Canyon along the Colorado River near Page, Arizona. Marvel at the view of this stunning rock from 1,000 feet above—be sure to bring your camera for a spectacular shot! Our drive then continues to Lake Powell. Supported by the Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell is a beautifully situated water reservoir on the Colorado River, surrounded by red rocks.

Bryce Canyon via Zion National Park

This morning, we head west to Zion National Park. The half-mile deep park floor is lush with foliage, as well as mule deer, wild turkeys, gray foxes, and the occasional porcupine. After lunch, continue to Bryce Canyon. Despite its name, Bryce is not a canyon but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters. Its distinctive geological structures, called hoodoos, were formed by frost weathering and stream erosion from the river. Standing at the rim, you are offered spectacular views in red, orange and white that will surely be spellbinding. (B)

Capitol Reef National Park

Discover Capitol Reef National Park. The area boasts a diverse landscape unlike anywhere else in Utah—stunning red rock formations and canyons, pristine meadows, alpine forests, and lush green valleys. Also throughout the park, you’ll find the Capitol Reef Petroglyphs, impressive rock art figures created by ancient Native Americans. For the past 150 million years, the more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches of Arches National Park have been sculpted by the natural erosion of wind, water, sun, and frost—creating an unmistakably unique landscape. See Balanced Rock, one of the park’s most iconic features; the impressive 52-foot tall Delicate Arch; and the Windows Section, a unique area with many arches that is considered the beating heart of the park. Canyonlands National Park

Explore Canyonlands National Park, a magical outdoor wonderland of enchanting vistas! The colorful park is divided into four districts—Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the combined Green and Colorado Rivers, which carved two large canyons into the Colorado Plateau. Marvel at the wild beauty and drama of this spectacular landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. This evening, we make our way to our hotel in Grand Junction, the hub of Colorado’s wine country. Take in the beautiful Rocky Mountains today on our drive through Colorado. Enjoy a change of scenery as you travel through Arapaho National Forest, which straddles the Continental Divide in the Front Range west of Denver. This evening we arrive for an overnight stay in Denver, one of the most up-and-coming cities in the U.S. The Mile High City is Colorado’s buzzing capital, where urban sophistication meets outdoor adventure! Rocky Mountain National Park to Cheyenne

This morning, we’ll enjoy a city tour of Denver before traveling to spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park. Discover scenic mountains, majestic alpine lakes, and an abundance of wildlife that call this park home. Then, continue to Cheyenne, Wyoming and learn about the rodeo and railroad capital of the Old West, which became the epicenter of westward rail expansion. Enjoy a leisurely evening tonight— perhaps stop at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza and Museum. (B)

Fort Laramie and Rapid City

Your first stop en route to South Dakota will be the Fort Laramie Historic Site, along the Oregon Trail. Originally a private fur trading fort, the “grand old post” became the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains. We’ll also visit The Mammoth Site, a museum and paleontological site, before we end the evening in Rapid City. (B)

Deadwood and Sheridan

Immerse yourself in Wild West history; we’ll begin with a morning stop in the frontier town of Deadwood, South Dakota. This city at the heart of the Black Hills Gold Rush is where Old West figures “Calamity Jane” once lived and where “Wild Bill” Hickok played his last game of cards. Then travel to the quaint town of Sheridan, Wyoming. This charming town is where western history and dramatic mountain vistas meet modern comforts in a serene setting. Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole

Today we pay a morning visit to Old Faithful, Yellowstone’s most famous geyser whose 20 daily eruptions attract many of the park’s 4 million annual visitors. This morning, we’ll travel to Utah’s grand capital. This beautiful city played host to the 2002 winter Olympics, and you can still enjoy many of the improvements designed to make the city welcoming.
