Eating Out in Munich

August 30, 2013 - 3:18pm
Food-lovers will enjoy the cuisine in Germany's food capital of Munich.

Munich is a food-lover's paradise. Although culinary exploration isn't what first comes to mind when visitors think of Munich, the city has plenty to offer when it comes to tasty cuisine. Senior travel groups will leave Munich quite satisfied, and the taste of delicious local delicacies will linger in their mouths.

As the gourmet capital of Germany, Munich has a number of restaurants from a range of price points and styles. Here are a few visitor favorites:

Alter Wirt
Renowned Alter Wirt is not far from the Munich Zoo in the neighborhood of Thalkirchen. At this classic Bavarian restaurant, guests can enjoy international specialties and sample an array of robust brews. This eatery serves up traditional Bavarian dishes, including Bavarian roast pork with dark beer sauce and "Schnitzel Wiener Art" (breaded pork escalope with cucumber and potato salad).

The menu also features special international themes such as "American Barbecue," and vegetarians can choose from eight, meat-free dishes.

This well-known, traditional Munich brewery has become so popular there are even locations in the United States; however, there's nothing quite like the original. Hofbrauhaus' history dates back to 1589 when it was founded by Wilhelm V, Duke of Bavaria. When it first opened, only brown ale was brewed, but the selection has since expanded to include nearly every type of beer guests can imagine. On the second floor of the historic building, you can taste Bavarian food and drinks while being entertained by an original oompah-pah band with traditional dancers dressed in dirndl and lederhosen.

Michaeli Garten
In the district of Ramersdorf in Munich, be sure to visit the banks of the lake in the East Park at the Michaeli Garten. Visitors can experience a true, outdoor German beer garden while enjoying edibles like a rustic cheese board. The restaurant features weekly themes and special events like romantic candle-lit dinners.

If the weather is right, take your meal outdoors in the garden by the lake. Isolated from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the city, you'll enjoy the peace and quiet the garden has to offer.

Schnitzel-lovers will have the time of their lives at the Schnitzelwirt in the Spatenhof. Those who enjoy the taste of veal or pork cutlets will also love the restaurant located within Munich's old town. Choose from Bavarian and Austrian cuisine, including Viennese schnitzel loaded with cranberries, chips, mushroom sauce and noodles.

Affordable travel packages can have food-lovers on their way to Munich for the food vacation of their dreams.
