Senior travel often involves exploring beautiful foreign lands that are rich in cultural and historical significance. When planning Europe tours, seniors will likely head to the major historical centers like Rome or Paris, yet those travelers might want to make a plan to head a little off the beaten path to explore the culture and history of Salzburg, Austria.

The fourth largest city in the country, Salzburg is one of Central Austria's most popular attractions, thanks in large part to its well-kept "Old Town," which was named an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The historical center of town features several examples of classic baroque architecture in famous churches, governmental buildings and classic homes, creating a classic atmosphere that transports visitors to another place in time.

Travelers will recognize much of the area from the famous musical "The Sound of Music," which was shot on location in the beauteous city. Vacationers can also explore the birthplace of one of history's greatest composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born in Salzburg during the 18th century.

Of these attractions, possibly the most beautiful is the Schloss Hellbrunn, or Hellbrunn Palace, a former summer home for the Archbishops of Salzburg that has been converted into a well-manicured garden complete with several - often surprising - fountains.
