Big Ben is not actually the name of the iconic clock tower in London, as many people mistakenly believe. Rather, it is the nickname given to the Great Bell housed within the tower. The bell itself weighs an impressive 13.7 tons and was cast in 1858. The tower that contains Big Ben has gone through several name changes throughout its history. Originally known as the Clock Tower, it was officially renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. This renaming pays tribute to the long-reigning monarch while preserving the historical significance of the structure.
A Tip To Prep For Your Trip
Be aware that European hotel rooms may not have amenitied you’re used to. For example, the room may not have access to phones or air conditioning. This means you’ll need to plan ahead for your communication needs, whether it’s setting up international calling on your mobile phone, using internet-based communication apps like WhatsApp, or making arrangements with family and friends about how to stay in touch. If air conditioning isn’t available in your room, you can often request a fan from the hotel’s reception to ensure a comfortable stay. Also, many hotels in Europe do not provide face cloths for their guests, either. If this is an essential item for your personal hygiene routine, make sure to pack your own.
