Here’s a handy guide to some of the country’s most iconic sights and experiences. 

1. Explore Croatia’s National Parks 

Croatia’s incredible landscape – marked by sparkling lakes, jagged cliffs and rugged mountains – is best experienced on a trip to some of its national parks. The country is home to eight sprawling national parks, each with its own distinct features: from terraced lakes to butterfly-filled valleys. 

On our tour of Croatia, you’ll get a chance to visit Plitvice Lakes, the country’s oldest and largest national park. With its crystal-clear lakes, lush meadows, and cascading waterfalls, the national park is straight out of a fairytale. Founded in 1949, the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes is best known for its 16 terraced lakes amid chalk and limestone cliffs held together by natural dams. Interspersed with caves, pools and over 90 waterfalls, the park has well laid-out walking trails. 

2. Marvel at its UNESCO sites 

Croatia is steeped in history, with visible traces of its rich past in its well-preserved walled cities and sprawling palaces. The country has 10 UNESCO sites, from lush national parks to historic old towns, many of which you can experience firsthand on a YMT tour.  

Stroll the maze-like cobblestone streets of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, discover one of the most striking examples of Roman architecture at the third century Diocletian’s Palace in the heart of Split, and take in the grandeur of Zadar’s majestic fortress.  
 

3. Savor the region’s finest wines 

If you enjoy sampling local wines, Croatia’s scenic vineyards make for a perfect break. Peljesac Peninsula on the Adriatic Coast between Split and Dubrovnik is one of the country’s main wine-growing regions, and is famous for its Plavac Mali, a deep red, fruity wine. Sip a glass of this full-bodied wine on a guided tour of the peninsula as part of our Croatia tour.  

Stop by wineries in Ston, a quaint town known for its salt pans and delicious oysters. The town is bordered by defensive stone walls built in the 14th century and it is believed to have taken four centuries to complete work on this complex structure, originally spanning 7,000 meters!  

4. Experience the world of Game of Thrones™   

Fans of the wildly popular HBO series have plenty to look forward to in Croatia. The series was shot in Split and Dubrovnik, and you can cover several filming locations when you travel to these cities with us. Coincidentally, some of these spots hold a lot of cultural and historical significance, so you’ll find them engaging even if you aren’t familiar with Game of Thrones™ (GOT).  

From the impressive Diocletian’s Palace in Split to the Rector’s Palace and medieval Old Town in Dubrovnik, the GoT universe comes to life in these cities. Dubrovnik served as the backdrop to the fictitious city of King’s Landing, and the Old Town has a few shops where you can pick up some GoT memorabilia!
